Halloween Films

Popular Halloween Films through the ages

Not only have these scary movies been hugely successful but they also lead to a string of follow up feature flicks creating the largest franchises in the genre. Some of the franchises have continued to release movie that are ideal as Halloween films, some have been rebooted with great success and others have evolved into vs battles between central characters. Though reviews of these Halloween films have been mixed demand shows no sign of waining, therefore we can expect plenty more from them in the future.

With so many different movie series to pick from it has proved to be a tough choice when it comes down to it. Examples of Halloween films that are must watch include the Evil Dead, Childs Play, Gremlins and Twilight (scared me to sleep! Sorry Twilight fans, couldn’t help myself!) series that cater for horror fans of all ages. If I haven’t included your favourite Halloween films please feel free to shout at me and put me right in the comments box below.

Here are a few of the popular movies that have become classic Halloween films:

Halloween

Starring the very impressionable Michael Myers the aptly named flick started out in 1978 and shows no sign of slowing with releases. A new movie is due out in 2012 after a successful reboot directed by Rob Zombie.

Nightmare on Elm Street

One of the most recognisable characters from all of the Halloween films on this list has to be Freddy Krueger played by Robert Englund. The king of nightmares would send chills down anyones spine and has caused many of us to miss countless hours of beauty sleep. If, like myself, you can’t afford to loose out on this rejuvinating time at night I would highly recommend avoiding these Halloween films like the plague!

Friday the 13th

Hockey mask wearing Jason drags with him a “hockey stick of death” as I like to call it. I missed the boat the first time around but these Halloween films are firmly stuck to my must watch list in October on the lead up to the end of the month. The collaboration in Freddy vs Jason breathed new life into the franchise and with it drew a new legion of fans.

Candyman

Go on…say it…I dare you! As a child I was dared to do the unthinkable by saying “Candyman” three times into a mirror. Thankfully im still here today to tell the tale but characters in the Candyman Halloween films were sadly not so lucky.

The so called original teen slasher movie, Scream has been one of the iconic Halloween films and popular Halloween costume picks at the same time. The scream mask is sold everywhere in October so buy yours and join the thousands of other anonymous killers worldwide.

Other Halloween Films Worth Mentioning

With so many Halloween films to choose from it can be a tough task to select a few that will please everyone. Should you go for all out horror? Lots of gore? A psycological rollercoaster? A few laughs along the way? Well, why not opt for all of them?

All out horror

Well take your pick! With this suggestion I was debating between a pool of Halloween films that really fit the bill. Either choose the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the Evil Dead or for the more hardcore fans of the genre try out Cannibal Ferox, Cannibal Holocaust or I spit on your grave. All of these make for perfect Halloween films but only if you can find them!

Lots of gore

This one’s easy. Both of the Hostel movies directed by Eli Roth and consulted on by Quentin Tarantino are full of gore that will make you feel sick. Perfect then for anyone that wants their Halloween films full of gore and violence.

Psychological rollercoaster

Bambi…no question. Oh, you meant in the horror genre? Well in that case it has to be with the Blair Witch Project, Silence of the Lambs or Paranormal Activity. These Halloween films scare the heck out of me on a psychological level with the latter preventing me from a good nights sleep for a few days after the first time I saw it.

A bit of a giggle

OK, it made me laugh, which in itself is quite disturbing. I am talking about American Psycho starring Brit Christian Bale. Batman was once a very disturbed man and will likely change your opinion of the man who currently plays the caped crusader. Give it a go with an open mind and enjoy one of the Halloween films I will be watching come the evening.
